The City of North Bay Village is a three-island community situated in northeast Miami-Dade County between the cities of Miami and Miami Beach. The three islands ( North Bay Island, Harbor Island and Treasure Island ) are linked by the John F. Kennedy (79th Street) Causeway, which extends across Biscayne Bay from Miami to Miami Beach. North Bay Island was created by dredging and bulk-heading around Broadcast Key, a five-acre island, where was located WIOD radio station. The first streets were laid out and the first twelve homes were built in 1941. Later on, Harbor Island and Treasure Island, which have been created by dredging and filling in the mid 1940's, were annexed, as was Broadcast Key in 1963. North Bay Village was incorporated in 1945. Harbor and Treasure Islands were annexed several years later. Broadcast Key, also known as Cameo Island, was annexed in 1963. During its early years, North Bay Village was primarily a haven for winter residents, the "snowbirds". . The City became widely known for its popular restaurants and nightclubs, with famous visitors as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. Throughout the end of the century, development slowly filled the landscape and nowadays hundreds of single family homes and condo buildings are giving the city a quite new face. Most of today's residents live here year-round. North Bay Village continues to be home to several of South Florida's most popular restaurants, as well as a variety of business enterprises, apartment buildings, condominiums and 376 single-family homes. Normandy Isle was created by a group of investors led by a Frenchman named Henri Levy in 1925. The man-made island sits just West of North Beach, with the Indian Creek Waterway to the East, the Normandy Canal to the North, and Biscayne Bay on its southern and western sides. Originally born as South Island, the area was soon renamed Normandy Isle and streets were named after French regions and towns such as Bordeaux, Notre Dame, and Versailles. Intersected by 71st Street and Normandy Drive, home to a local business district, the first apartments and a landmark fountain were present in 1925. The fountain still stands today but the buildings did not survive the 1926 hurricane. In the 40's and 50’s, new construction could be seen on the northern waterfront Calais and Marseilles drives. Normandy Isle, with a high proportion of single family homes, tries to keep its traditionally family friendly atmosphere. A variety of residences in Mediterranean, Art Deco, Streamline Modern, and Ranch styles were mostly built during the 1940s and 1950s. The Saturday farmers' market around the fountain and Normandy Isle park, has become a beloved tradition. New projects to add community activities, around pools, sport fields, are trying to maintain the little town feeling. We should mention on the North side, a gated community, Normandy Shores, built around an 18-hole golf course. It was created in 1939 by the city of Miami Beach, by dredging the bay waters. Tennis courts, parks, and activity centers are the heart of the 350 homes compound, many of them built in the 50's and 60's. As of the census of 2000, 6,733 people, 3,132 households and 1,519 families were residing in North Bay Village. There have been some concerns between city residents about its eventual transformation in a "condo canyon". The city recently passed an ordinance which regulates new developments, by mandating the inclusion of retail spaces in residential projects. . This island community is seeing an explosion in new developments and is arguably one of the best situated communities in Miami (on the bay, between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale). Surrounded by wonderful bay views, and very close to hot South Beach, Bal Harbor, Aventura, as well as Miami Airport, makes this community a preferred destination for home buyers, tourists and investors.
